A restoration and extension to a Queen Anne period residence located in inner-city Naarm / Melbourne to create a functional family home with a series of adaptable spaces.

The brief involved reorganising the internal configuration of the existing heritage house to maximise amenity and program. The light-filled courtyard, connected by a glazed link with a terrace and roof garden a new addition that frames the original house.

Referencing the picturesque qualities of the existing, the addition bookends the corner site and provides a playful silhouette of asymmetrical roof forms, building upon the rhythm of the existing roof pitches and details. Clad in diamond zinc shingles, the addition is distinct, yet subservient to the hierarchy of the existing heritage residence.

We sought to sensitively reorganise spaces to maximise natural light and cross-flow ventilation. The occupants have access to the garden and views from within, which promotes sustainable living, health and well-being. The existing building fabric was meticulously repaired and reused, including slate roofing and stained-glass windows. New materials, including zinc- shingles, timber linings and steel-framed windows, are robust and low-maintenance, selected for the materials’ longevity.
